How to reheat chips

Not a fan of soggy chips? I’ll show you how to reheat your chips in the air fryer so they’re properly crispy again in 8 minutes.
At a glance: reheating chips in the air fryer
- Temperature: 180 °C
- Time: 8–10 minutes
- Rule: Space = crunch. Only fill the basket halfway.
Chips in the air fryer: step-by-step guide
Forget the microwave – the steam just makes your chips soft and soggy. The air fryer, on the other hand, uses circulating hot air to get rid of excess moisture. That firms them up again and gives the outside its bite back.
- Spread them out: You don’t even need to preheat – just tip the chips into the basket. Make sure they’re not piled up too high. If the air can’t reach everywhere, your chips will stay soggy where they touch.
- Start: Set it to about 180 °C and let it run for 4-5 minutes.
- Shake: After 4–5 minutes, give the basket a good shake so the hot air reaches every side of the chips.
- Finish: Then cook for another 4–5 minutes until they’re as golden as you like.
From my experience: Have a quick look after 6 minutes in total. Very thin chips are often ready sooner.
My tips for reheated chips
One trick really made a difference to my air fryer chips: water! Spray your chips with a little water before putting them in the air fryer. This reactivates the potato starch and makes them crispier on the outside.
With 1 tbsp of oil spray, your chips get even crispier. I explain more about oil spray for the air fryer here.
FAQs: everything you need to know about reheating chips in the air fryer
Can you cook frozen chips in the air fryer?
Yes! Cook frozen chips straight from the freezer, without defrosting, at 200 °C for about 12–15 minutes.
Why do chips get crispier in the air fryer than in the microwave?
The steam in the microwave usually leaves your chips mushy and soggy. The air fryer uses efficient convection instead: the circulating hot air draws moisture out of the surface and gives you a perfect crust.
Do I need extra oil?
No. You don’t need any extra oil to reheat chips in the air fryer. Thanks to the hot air, reheated chips get crispy even without oil.
My chips are still soft – what should I do?
It’s usually because the basket is too full. Reduce the amount or cook smaller batches one after the other.
My chips are getting too dark – why?
The temperature is too high or the time is too long. With thin chips in particular, you can shorten the cooking time a little.
