Do you need to preheat an air fryer? Often, yes – but not always. I tested it loads, so here’s the quick version. Your chips will thank you. 🍟

Preheating your air fryer at a glance

  • Worth it for: chips, breaded food and meat
  • Time: 3–5 minutes at your cooking temperature
  • Rule of thumb: preheat first, then add your food

Why preheat your air fryer?

When food goes into a hot air fryer, it starts cooking straight away and evenly. That’s what makes it properly crispy. I noticed it most with chips: cold start was fine, preheated was so much better.

When to preheat your air fryer – and when to skip it

✅ Preheat for:

  • Chips, wings and anything breaded
  • Steak, schnitzel and burgers
  • Chicken breast and eggs
  • Leftovers you want crispy again

⏭️ Skip it for:

  • Long cooks like a whole chicken
  • Quick veg sides
  • Busy weeknights – life’s too short

How to preheat your air fryer

  1. Set your cooking temperature (e.g. 180°C).
  2. Run it empty for 3–5 minutes.
  3. Add your food and start the timer.

Got a preheat button? Even easier: set the temperature and press it.

My tip: Preheat with the basket in. A hot basket helps the bottom crisp up too.

How long does it take to preheat an air fryer?

TemperaturePreheat time
160°C2–3 minutes
180°C3–4 minutes
200°C4–5 minutes

Bigger or dual-basket models may need a minute or two longer.
